Book Review: The Treasure Map of Boys by e. lockhart

The Treasure Map of Boys by e. lockhart
The third book in the Ruby Oliver series by e. lockhart finds Ruby returning to school after winter break of her junior year. She’s still somewhat reluctantly seeing her therapist, Dr. Z, working at the zoo, and figuring out where she stands with her ex-best friends. But most importantly, she’s trying to deal with her conflicting feelings about the boys in her life: Noel, her adorable chemistry partner; Jackson, her ex and source of most of her current problems; Gideon, the dreamy older brother of friend Nora; Finn, the sexy soccer star who works at the coffee shop; and Hutch, the metal-head who helps her dad with gardening.

I loved the previous two Ruby Oliver books, but listened to both of them as audiobooks, so it was a different experience reading a physical book this time. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed this third installment. E. Lockhart has created such an endearing character in Ruby and deftly captured the subtleties of teen interaction. Ruby has complicated and often agonizing relationships with all of the supporting characters. For example, she realizes how bad her ex-boyfriend was to her, yet still secretly hopes he’ll fall for her again. Lockhart isn’t afraid to let Ruby fail and doesn’t feel the need to sugarcoat any of Ruby’s relationships, which is refreshing. The book has a satisfying conclusion, but still leaves a lot to expand on. Can’t wait for book four!

The Treasure Map of Boys comes out on July 25!
