Weekend Box Office Preview: Jan. 22 and Jan. 29
The Weekend Box Office Preview features movies with teen and tween appeal opening in the next two weeks. For the most part I won’t feature R-rated films, but occasionally there will be R-rated movies on teens’ radar and the rating will be noted. Limited release movies will be featured the week they get a wide release.
The post is a bit late this week, so I’m keeping the summaries brief.
January 22
Tooth Fairy aims for the lowest common denominator with this family film starring Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock). An aggressive hockey player nicknamed the tooth fairy (he’s knocks his opponents teeth out, see) must learn the error of his ways by becoming an actual tooth fairy for a week.
In Legion (Rated R), it’s judgment day and a fallen angel leads a band of strangers to save a woman who may be pregnant with Christ in his second coming. Lots of paranormal action, but a weak plot may make this a flop.
Based on the book and The Cure and a real family, Extraordinary Measures tells the story of a father who stops at nothing to find a cure for his kids’ disease. It stars Brendan Fraser as the dad and Harrison Ford as the research scientist he enlists help him.
January 29
A single museum curator (Kristen Bell) unwittingly becomes the object of three men’s affection after pulling their coins out of the Trevi fountain in When In Rome. This broad, slapstick heavy comedy is apparently loosely based on the 1954 film Three Coins in the Fountain.
Best bets: Stay home, all three Jan. 22 movies have less than 30% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Maybe rent something from the new Fabulous Films for Young Adults list?
Coming up: Dear John, based on the Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name (Feb. 5), Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, based on the book by Rick Riordan (Feb. 12), and ensemble rom-com Valentine’s Day (Feb. 12)
